garbage turned art

2401
Jean Shin is doing her part to combat America’s garbage problem, one mindmelting art installation at a time. The Brooklyn-based artist’s widely divergent body of work shares a few common traits: it’s all highly labor-intensive, it’s all made from discarded materials (whether wine bottles, prescription pill bottles, cheap umbrellas, or lottery tickets), and it’s all awesome.
But Shin’s interest in recycled materials actually has more to do with social engagement than environmental commentary. As she told Sculpture Magazine:

“It’s not just finding beauty in the mundane, it’s finding a connection with someone. The finished installation brings the individual experience to the collective. The labor-intensive, transformative process is like alchemy. By soliciting cast-off materials from communities, the projects reveal how we live, who we are, what we do. My primary interest is to figure out how to engage with the next community and how we are going to begin a conversation, a relationship.”

Tom Foerstel

Founder & President

Growing up in the San Francisco Bay Area in the 60’s, Tom developed a strong desire to create positive change for people and planet.

He went on to pursue his passion for art and design at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, and worked for design firms in Southern California before moving to Boise, Idaho in the early 80’s. Foerstel Design opened its doors in 1985. Since its inception, the firm has cultivated a bold, happy, forward-looking team focussed on creating distinct and effective work on behalf of their clients.

An integral part of Tom’s philosophy is giving back to the community in which he lives — a company cornerstone that drives Foerstel’s long history of providing pro-bono services to local non-profit humanitarian and arts programs.

One of Tom’s proudest personal achievements is his ability to say Supercalifragilisticexpyalidocious backwards.
