Photographer Hannah Whitaker and journalist Malia Wollan are the collaborative duo behind Rise and Shine, an interesting look at what children eat for breakfast around the world and created especially for the New York Times magazine.
According to the pair, American children tend to “lack imagination when it comes to breakfast”, with the vast majority opting for cold cereal – and those with children are more likely to buy the sugary kinds. Which is why Whitaker and Wollan wanted to show that there’s more to life than cornflakes and chocolate milk, even if it means some of the dishes uncovered would seem strange or unpalatable to many Americans.
As Krishnendu Ray, a professor of food studies at New York University exclaimed in the magazine’s article, “The idea that children should have bland, sweet food is a very industrial presumption. In many parts of the world, breakfast is tepid, sour, fermented and savory.”
