Understand the Product

Before beginning the design process, consider creating a list of all important details that must be included in the packaging. It is important to decide early what information consumers need to see and what is unimportant. Some examples of information to add to food packaging design include:

  • Safety
  • Nutrition
  • Care

Know Your Target Audience

You must know exactly who your target audience is, is imperative to creating successful packaging design. Understanding the industry, interests, and consumers’ background is all important information to help you design.

Conduct Competitor Analysis

Consider looking at what your competitors are doing in terms of packaging. By analyzing what your competitors are doing, you will be able to gain a better understanding of what works, and what will not work for your packaging design. Another advantage to analyzing the packaging design is determining what you need to do to stand out.

Define Brand Identity

It is crucial to remain consistent with your brand identity in your packaging design. By being consistent, your product will be more easily recognized and remembered on the shelves by consumers.

Use High-Quality Materials

Many times, the material your business chooses to use on its packaging is equally as important as the design. Consider using high-quality materials that are not easily tearable or breakable. Determining which material is best depends on the type of product you are selling.

Use High-Quality Images and Graphics

The images and graphics you choose for your packaging design must be high quality. If your design is pixelated or blurry, consumers will not trust the quality of your brand and product.

Keep it Simple

Your packaging design goal should be to catch the attention of the consumer. It is important to not get too carried away with the design and remember that consumers tend to want their information served to them in a clear and concise manner.

Consider Sustainability

Consumers are becoming more and more aware of the environmental impact packaging has. Because of this, consider emphasizing sustainability within your packaging process. Using recyclable or biodegradable materials is a great idea to reduce your business’s negative environmental impact.

Test and Iterate

Testing and making adjustments to your initial design is an important step in the design process. Gather as much feedback as you can from your consumers about what they think about your packaging design. This information is collected in many different ways before launching your final art. Some of these methods include:

  • Focus groups
  • A/B testing
  • Polls
  • Social Media Questionnaires
