Sales and Marketing

Sales and marketing are both two crucial components of any business. The sales department relies on the marketing team to increase brand exposure and generate leads. For the sales department to turn those leads into sales, there is crucial for open communication between the two departments. These two teams are typically naturally pretty connected, but if the chemistry between them is ruined, it can be detrimental to the company’s bottom line.

15 Ways to Break Down Silos Between Sales and Marketing

  1. Focus on Shared Goals
    • It is important to focus on how the sales and marketing teams depend on each other to grow the company.
  2. Empower Sharing Knowledge
    • Building a culture where both teams feel confident to share information and knowledge will help keep the flow moving forward.
  3. Consider Job Swaps
    • One way to better understand the other team is to consider doing a job swap during internal training.
  4. View Sales as PR’s Client
    • In B2B public relations, typically, the brief is intended to make it easier to sell, and the sales department turns into the client.
  5. Learn the ‘Love Language’ of Sales
    • The ‘love language’ of sales teams boils down to leads. How is the marketing team contributing to their sales goals?
  6. Map Out All Target Audiences
    • Including all current and potential customers, the main messaging, and the methods both teams have to communicate is the first step to be taken when targeting.
  7. Tailor Internal User Journeys to User Personas
    • Creating user personas is a great way to develop messaging and user-centered exercises that will help ultimately reach both departments’ goals.
  8. Ensure the Heads of Both Departments are Aligned
    • It is crucial for the head of sales and the CMO are aligned on their strategy so their teams can work collaboratively and effectively.
  9. Have Both Teams in Constant Communication
    • The marketing and sales team should work hand-in-hand and stay in constant communication.
  10. Focus on Solving Customer Problems Together
    • Working on team chemistry is important so the departments can help solve their customers’ problems.
  11. Have Teams Discuss Friction Points
    • For the departments to work together successfully, they must discuss the pain points they may be experiencing because of the other.
  12. Develop Interdepartmental Training
    • Marketing and sales must work together for the business to be successful. Providing training opportunities for team members to participate will help everyone be on the same page about each project’s progress.
  13. Define Common Terms to Create a Universal Language
    • Defining terms that are frequently used between departments is a great way to help both teams work together smoothly.
  14. Foster Mutual Respect, Understanding, and Trust
    • For a team to operate effectively, it is imperative to establish mutual respect and trust.
  15. Have Marketing Sit in on Sales Calls
    •  By having the marketing team sit in on sales calls, they will understand the project and what is expected of them.
